My name is George Skoufis and I am a Recovery Coach and mental health advocate. I know what it is like to think that I would have to live with mental illness for the rest of my life. For a long time I did not hold any hope of recovery. It wasn't until I saw a story of someone with an eating disorder, that I realised what I was going through wasn't a lack of willpower to be perfect, but a mental illness.
Asking for help was the most difficult thing I have ever done. That is why I knew I wanted to use my story to make a difference. In 2009, I decided to approach The Butterfly Foundation. Over the ensuing years, I specialised in the eating disorder space, becoming the lead male recovered in Australia. From there, my career as a recovered speaker and future peer support worker had begun.
I believe that every person and their story is unique. While I I know that I have an understanding of what you are going through, I don't assume anything. I want to get to know YOU. The person that you are. Your mental illness does not define you, nor is it who you are. It is something that you are experiencing and I believe that I can help you to navigate your recovery and to move forward in your journey beyond mental illness.
When I am not working or volunteering in mental health, I love to keep fit through running, swimming, strength work and yoga. I am huge sports fan and love to watch AFL, Formula 1, NFL and more! I also love going to the movies, on road trips and can't wait to be able to do some travel again when we are allowed!
